‘Thrillerdome’ to get total makeover

By Bud L. Ellis

One of Georgia Tech’s most famous sports landmarks may be set for a major renovation after basketball season ends next spring.

According to published reports, a project to renovate Alexander Memorial Coliseum could start as soon as March 2011. Favors heading to NBA

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets freshman center Derrick Favors has announced that he will enter his name into the NBA Draft.

Favors came into Georgia Tech with a lot of hype. Many compared Favors to Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard because of his athleticism and chiseled physique.

The move comes as little surprise as many project Favors to go in the top five of the NBA Draft.

Favors becomes just the latest top recruit hauled in by head coach Paul Hewitt to leave well before his senior season, something that has really hurt the Yellow Jackets in recent years.

The center said he enjoyed his time at Georgia Tech and that his year with the team certainly helped him become a better basketball player, but that he is ready for the next step in his career.

Hewitt turns down St. John’s

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head coach Paul Hewitt has turned down a contract offer from St. John’s.

Hewitt said his family is comfortable in the Atlanta area and he did not want to uproot them.

He is from the New York area and was previously the head coach at Siena, making the job attractive to him.

It also didn’t hurt that some Georgia Tech fans have been calling for Hewitt’s head because of the lack of success in recent years.

Georgia Tech’s athletic director said they are thrilled that Hewitt is returning and did not seem like he was upset at the job he has done at the school.

Hewitt meeting with St. John’s

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head coach Paul Hewitt has met with St. John’s over their vacant head coaching position.

Hewitt has been taking a lot of heat down in Atlanta for his team’s medicore play the past few years.

Some of that talk eased with the team’s deep run in the ACC tournament and first-round win in the Big Dance.

Still, Hewitt has grown tired of the criticism and has even stopped talking to some media in Atlanta.

St. John’s hasn’t been a factor in more than a decade and would be a tough rebuilding project.
